Do I have to bleach my hair to dye it a non-natual color?

I want to streak my hair either with pinkish-purple dye or blue. But I'm not sure if I would need to bleach it first or not. My natural hair color is dark brown and currently is died jet black. I so could bleaching it permentaly damage it? I am mixed but my hair is more black than white so it get damaged easier.

If your hair is that dark, you will have to strip it first. If you don't, the color will not be very noticeable.

It won't perm. damage your hair, but it will be more dry so you'll need a good conditioner. Maybe even a leave in. The best stuff I've used for softness and smoothness are the ones made for making your hair smooth or sleek. They don't really straighten your hair but my hair is the softest when I use them.

For salon quality products, I love Matrix sleek.look.

For store bought there's a couple that are pretty good:

Herbal essences pin straight/dangerously straight; Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine; and believe it or not, Suave Sleek is pretty good.

Good luck.

You would have to bleach it. I would suggest getting your hair stripped of color at a salon (or at least the hair that you want to be a different color), so that it doesn't get damaged like it will if you bleach it yourself. Since your hair is so dark, unnatural colors will not show AT ALL unless you bleach it.

IT wouldn't permanantly damage it but your hair will be very dry and coarse for a while. i recommend waiting a few more months. and yes you have to bleach it almost all the time

Yup, you'd have to bleach it if you wanted permanent (or semi-permanent) streaks of colour in it. Your hair wouldn't be permanently damaged, since it would grow out undamaged, but the bits that had bleach applied to them would probably be pretty fried if you're trying to go from black to a bleached shade that will take pink. Black and dark brown hair tends to bleach to an orange colour, so in order to get a true pink or purple, it would have to be pretty severely bleached, and probably more than once.

Alternatively, you could see if you can find some "hair paint". Basically it's like mascara for your hair, that you can just paint streaks of colour in with. And once you wash your hair, it washes right out.

bleach it

if you don't the color you put it will look muddy

it will damage your hair, but it will grow out. and dyeing it damages it also, so your hair is already damaged.

but.... go to a professional to have it done so there's less chance of it getting messed up

you gotta bleach it yea. another tip, it can be convenient to mix a bleaching agent with the color your trying to get your hair to turn, so that way you dont bleach out anything you dont color and color anything you dont bleach. also, semipermanent colors like manic panic usually get the most vibrant look, but you gotta redye every month or so. good luck

You will create damage to your already tinted (black) hair.

Solution: get strand by strand extensions or clip on. I recommend the S by S better.

Check out my blog for ideas and links to extensions retailers.

If the bleaching is done correctly it will not permanetly damage. In my experience black hair dye is an extreme pain in the *** to get out, and if you're prone to changing hair colors, anything with red is also difficult to remove without it looking orange.

Your best bet would be to have this professionally done in a few sittings. Although expensive it is better than frying your hair. When my hair was hot pink, I had to have a professional strip out the color, and even then, it still wasn't totally gone.

A lot of times you can get a free consultation, I suggest doing this before changing your hair color. :)
